Volunteers will be needed for the Little Kids State Tournament - 3/12

All, the Roswell program will be hosting the Little School State Duals at Milton on Saturday, March 12, 2011.

We need volunteers to work tables, work admissions, security, concessions, the hospitality room, data entry -- etc.  We are going to use the Roswell Folkstyle classic volunteer list as the basis for our volunteer slots. We realize that many folks are on to other sports in March, but we need to have all of our Parents (High School Middle School and Elementary School) parents involved in volunteering. If we don't have you, we don't have a tournament.  This is a fund raiser that helps us replace "selling stuff."

If you know of a youth group or are involved in a youth group who need to do community service or who would be willing to volunteer, please let Karen Miller know @ jeffkarmil@yahoo.com . We need boppers aged 10+, runners 8th grade + and assistance with additonal operations.

We mostly need parents to do brackets, table coordination, timing, scoring, security, concessions, admissions among other duties.

Karen Miller will be coordinating volunteer slots for the tournament - the Middle School State Duals was a Milton tournament, the Little School State is a Roswell Tournament. We will be also reaching out to Milton for volunteers, but need our program to step up for key positions.

If you've ever worked a tournament before (or have been to a tournament before) - the goal of Roswell tournaments is to have every position filled and every function to work like clockwork in order to have no issues. Nobody likes downtime and nobody likes having to go to a tournament that runs smoothly. We need your help - so please start planning your schedules to be available on March 12th and March 13th to work the Little Kids state tournament. This is a big deal for Roswell and helps to keep our registration fees low for your wrestlers!

You will be seeing more in email this next few weeks regarding the tournament and proposed training classes.

If you have any questions regarding volunteer positions, please direct them to Karen Miller at jeffkarmil@yahoo.com.

Thanks,
Karen Miller

Congratulations to our Middle School Team for Placing 5th in the USA Division!

Congratulations to our Middle School Dual Team for placing 4th in the USA Division at Middle School Duals!

This is a great accomplishment for our wrestlers - we gave up 2 slots (automatic 12 point loss) and ended up wrestling-back to accomplish placement in the USA division.  In the USA division there were 14 Teams, we ended up 5th! Over all at the State duals there were 30 teams.  So we held our own and did remarkable well, as we knew our wrestlers would!  Can you all imagine what we'd do if we had all of our slots filled!

We wrestled well and all of our wrestlers put on their "A" game - we are so proud of you all. We are proud of all of our parents too!!

Great Job Roswell JR Hornet Wrestling!

Roswell Wrestlers Headed to State After Winning Region Duals

On January 8 the Roswell Hornets Varsity Wrestlers did something no team in school history had ever done: they placed first at the region meet.

The Hornets grappled their way to the 6 – AAAAA Duals at West Forsyth High School knocking off the host Wolverines in the championship round.

In round one the third seeded Hornets dominated Northview with a 68-12 win. In round two, Roswell had to take on No. 2 seed North Forsyth. The round two match was filled with drama and it came down to the last match. Sam Cowart (senior) clinched the win when he pinned his opponent in the third round to give Roswell a 35-24 victory. And

In the finals, Roswell upped the drama when they beat West Forsyth by only one point (34-33). The team had intense workouts and sacrificed their winter break. This is the first time in the history of Roswell that the team will be going to the State Duals Championship in Macon.

Congratulations to Head Coach Evan Goff, and Assistant Coaches Travis Carr & Daniel Brunner. Senior Co-Captains Jake Martin and Brent Zucker helped lead the team to victory. Team members (listed with their weight class) include: Brennan Ninesling - 103, Rowdy Miller- 112, Jake Martin – 119, Brent Zucker – 125,Charles Routt – 130, Eric Lewis – 135, Chaz Gunning – 140, Conner Slewitzke – 145, Corey Wilson – 152, Sam Cowart – 160, Andrew Kwateng – 171, Nick Hodges – 189, Timmy Thomas – 215 and Max Navarra – Heavyweight

Other varsity team members that were present at the tournament were Danny Bazemore, Miller Smith and Patrick Partain. Roswell has been celebrating a successful season so far by taking a second place finish in the Turkey Trot Duals and second in the Morgan County Tournament.

Hornets win area, move on to state - NeighborNewspapers.com Article

1/13/11 -  Hornets win area, move on to state - By Ryan Peck -  peck@neighbornewspapers.com

(Photo Caption: The Roswell Hornets celebrate their Area 6AAAAA dual championship at West Forsyth last weekend. It was the first area team title in school history for Roswell, which will head to Macon for the Class-AAAAA state championships in February).

In what marked the biggest weekend in Roswell wrestling in quite some time, the Hornets swept through the area duals at West Forsyth on Saturday and snagged the 6AAAAA team title.

The area championship marked the first dual title in school history and clinched a berth in the state duals, which have been rescheduled for Feb. 24 to 26 in Macon due to inclement weather across the state this week.

At West Forsyth, Roswell dispatched Northview (68-12), North Forsyth (35-24) and the home-standing Wolverines (34-33) in the final round, setting off a celebration and clinching a Hornets berth in the GHSA state festivities next month.

"It's just huge, because when I first started with the program three years ago we forfeited three weight classes (at area) and finished eighth out of 10 (teams)," said RHS head coach Evan Goff, who had served as a Roswell assistant the previous two years.

"In just a matter of three years, winning in a new region - one of the strongest in terms of depth in the whole state - it means a great deal," Goff added.

At state, the fifth-seeded Hornets will battle Benedictine in the first round at the Macon Centreplex. If it advances, Roswell will face the winner of Kennesaw Mountain-Parkview in the second round with a potential semifinal matchup against top-seed and perennial state power Collins Hill looming after that.

Back at West Forsyth, the Hornets were led by Chaz Gunning (140 pounds), Jake Martin (119) and Corey Wilson (152). Goff said freshmen Rowdy Miller (112) and Charles Routt (130) also came up big, wrestling beyond their years in a hostile environment.

"Every West Forsyth person was there pulling for [the Wolverines]," said Goff. "It was great to overcome the hometown crowd and kinda shut 'em up. Our kids were definitely excited, but we were classy about it. We definitely felt deserving."

Roswell was the lone north Fulton program to advance to the state duals in Macon. Milton, which had narrowly defeated Roswell earlier this season, finished third at the 6AAAAA duals.

Now moving on to state, Goff and the Hornets feel like they will be playing with house money.

"Our chances of winning are slim, but our goal is to come out there and knock off some teams," he said.

With the delay, Roswell (11-2) now shifts its focus to a Wednesday home match against Lassiter. The rescheduled state duals will follow the traditional tournaments for area, sectional and state, which are scheduled to take place the first three weekends in February.

Middle School Team - Tremendious Effort!

A job well done today to our Middle School Dual Team, even if it doesn't seem that way. Just remember, we gave up 30 team points before we even stepped on the mat for the first bout of each round (5 unfilled slots - total of 6 team points per forfeit(6X5=30)) - we were playing catch up and almost did a few times, so we have some talent!! That's huge and needs to be developed!

We had some stellar matches and wrestled well  and actually had some close team scores - Just imagine what we could have done with a full roster! The thing about duals is that while, individually it's always great to win, but to be there! If you aren't there on a team and we have to forfeit, we lose 6 points. If you get caught and lose by points that's only a 3-4 point loss - if another team doesn't have a wrestler at your weight, we get 6 points. So, it's important as a team that we have a full roster.  Even if you are an alternate, that is an important part of a dual team, you are there to support your teammates and just as important as the starting lineup.

The dual format is how you will wrestle in High School and  the one thing that we hope all of our Middle Schooler's learned today is that whatever you do on the mat, affects what happens to the rest of your teammates.  We had some tight matches that could have gone either way and we had a few upset matches as well. Keep that in mind as prepare for the Middle School State Duals at Milton on January 22, 2011. Most of our middle schoolers who helped Roswell place 4th in Division and 7th in State last year are back with us this year - we have some fantastic wrestlers and hope our missing ones today can join us for the State tournament.

You all represented Roswell well, we are all proud of each and everyone of you for your sportsmanship and support of one another - that is first and foremost of our program.

Your High School "brothers" won their first Dual Regional Championship yesterday in the history at Roswell, that is huge!   Shake off individual losses and even today's team losses at the Duals - you all showed that you were a team, lets work as a team to learn from mistakes and to work with each other to build on our strengths!

Way to go JR Hornet Middle School - you wrestled great today!!! Keep working!!

Roswell Folkstyle Classic Training

It takes a lot of vounteers to run a tournament - we need each family in the JR program to volunteer for at least one session at the Folkstyle Classic - we have a morning session for the elementary kids and will have the afternoon session for the middle school kids.  We will be working 2 other tournaments this year, Middle School State Duals, January 22, 2011 and the Little Kids State Tournament.

We need table workers as there is a possibility that the High School Varsity Team may qualify for area state duals the same weekend as our Folkstyle Classic. If you are new to the sport, brackets are a great way to get more involved, if you have some experience volunteering at one of our tournaments, volunteer for a table coordinator, timer or scorer position. We will be having training through out the month of January in preparation for the tournaments.

Handouts for the training can be found on the Roswell Folkstyle Classic Website. Click on volunteers.

Next Training Sessions:
Monday, January 3rd, at 7:00 pm at the new training facility.

Wednesday, January 5th, at 6:30 pm at the new training facility.
