Roswell JR Hornet Wrestling Update - November 17, 2011:

Recruiting:
We are still looking for wrestlers and will take wrestlers throughout the season - spread the word. The more wrestlers we have at all sizes and abilities, the better we can partner folks up - and work with varied abilities and sizes to make everyone better. So help us recruit. Spread the word - Wrestling is a terrific sport to teach dedication, determination and responsiblity. Wrestlers don't have to be athletes, they just need to have the drive to want to!
Thanksgiving Week Practices:
No practices next Thursday - enjoy the Holiday (middle school).
Fundraising:
Our meat drive is still going. We put in our first order last Friday - the meat sale is ongoing. If you will continue to sell and keep the orders coming in. The meat is really good, we bought two packages and will get us through to January. We will be placing a second order on Friday, Dec 2 with the pick up Tuesday, Dec 6. So please start bring in your orders. If you need order forms please let me know. I originally asked for families to purchase, but if you can sell too - that's huge for the program. It's actually a good deal if you cost it out. Ideally, if the JR programs can sell another 37 meat between now and March, we can make our budget for the year.
Spirit Wear:
We also still have spirit wear on sale - limited quanties but most all sizes at discounted prices - we have cotton shirts, dry fit shirts as well as mesh shorts.

Swap/Shop:
If you have wrestling shoes headgear that you no longer want - and would like to donate - we will collect them. If you need head gear/shoes and want to trade up we'll work on trying to find you the gea - for trade. If you need headgear/shoes we will sell you for $5.00 per. - provided we have. All proceeds go directly to the club.

2011 Roswell Youth Day Parade - We need new and returning wrestlers to participate!

Roswell JR Hornet Wrestling will be participating in the 61st Annual Frances MaGahee Youth Day Parade - October 1, 2011.

Any new and/or returning wrestlers who are interested in participating are encouraged to let coach Miller know via email @ jeffkarmil@charter.net. We have a pick-up truck and banner and will be passing out candy throughout the parade route.

This is a fun event for our City and will assist us in getting the word out about Roswell Wrestling - watch your emails for additional details as we would like the wrestlers to wear the same practice clothing.

This year's theme is "The Rec Makes Life Fun." We are associated with the other JR Hornet programs and are Rec to a degree - Help us bring Roswell Wrestling to the forefront of acknowledgement - similar to our football, lacross and baseball programs in our City.  The High School wrestling team is being ranked in the top 15 in our Georgia 5-A region  this year  - our JR program feeds the High School and most of the anticipated varsity team this season has worked through the JR program.

Wrestling Rocks! Help us spread the word!!

Roswell JR Hornet Wrestling @ Roswell HS Home Football Games!

Roswell JR Hornet Coaches will have an informational table at this fall's Roswell HS football games.

Stop by to chat with our coaches Head Middle School Coach,  Randy Faires, National Wrestling Hall of famer and Head Elementary School Coach and JR Director Jeff Miller about the program.

The program is open to children aged 6/7-14 years of age - no experience is necessary.  We are looking forward to an exciting season this year and will be happy to provide information and answer any questions that you may have. We have a talented cadre of coaches who all work well with the children and all have received extensive background checks.

Come out to support Roswell HS football and check out Roswell Wrestling at the same time! Wrestling is great conditioning for other sports and highly competitive!

See what our coaches were up to over the summer!

Several of our coaches were busy this summer - hanging out with the Atlanta Braves. As the video shows it's probably a good thing that the Braves didn't decide to keep them otherwise they wouldn't be doing so well on their bid to the playoffs! Our coaches are better wrestlers than baseball players!

Congratulations to our Elementary JRs at State(s) Saturday!

You guys all did great on Saturday!  We had a number of first year wrestlers qualify and attend the State Tournament Saturday more so than any year in the past! Everyone had very tough matches and worked hard during the season to improve and learn more technique. To make it to State, is a major accomplishment. You participated in a tournament with some of the best wrestlers in the State.

Even the effort the past two weeks of post season practices has been phenominal. We had several team members who did not qualify for state, but stayed on to practice with those who had - that's team work!

Two Elementary Team members earned a State Title Saturday....

Gavin Pope - State Champion - U6 - 43lbs - Little Kids State

Kaitlyn Haug - State Champion - Grades 3-5 - 64-65lbs. - Team Georgia Girls State Tournament
(this is a double first, not only was this the first time we had a girl wrestler win a State title, but this is the first time there's been a Girls State Tournament in Georgia - Kaitlyn will be recorded as the first Champion for her division in the State of Georgia (Read What Team Georgia Has to Say - click here! ))

Titles well earned and well deserved by both of these wrestlers - Congratulations to you both!!

Congratulations to ALL of our Elementary School Wrestlers - what a great team of young wrestlers we have had all through out the season! You have all tried your best, done your best, shown sportsmanship, never gave up and above all, you have had fun!

We have acquired some really neat coaches over the years - who deserve awesome Kudos and are fantastic! Our parents/parent coaches ... wow! You are the best and bend over backwards to any call of need and jump right in - your support is just beyond belief! Thank you for supporting Roswell Wrestling and supporting your child(ren) to continue wrestling! Hope you all come back next year!! You've all been a delight!

Go Roswell Wrestling! Hope to see you all at the Little Kids Banquet on the 21st at Monkey Joes!

Congratulations Roswell JR Hornets!! WOW!!

Way to go Roswell JR Hornets!  What a great season and what a great bunch of wrestlers we have!  You all have worked hard in both practices and matches! We are proud of each and every one of you - keep working and learning!

Wrestling is a difficult sport - you practice for hours for just a few minutes on the mat in competition and in competition, it's just you, your opponent and the mat for just minutes of emotionally charged and physically challenging "work."

You've all have risen to the challenge of the work effort and while outcomes of matches may not have met your expectations, remember how many new moves you've learned, your first take down, your first reversal, your first nearfall, your first pin, your first win, your first tourney placement ...we've been there excited for you on all those firsts. It takes practice, determination and dedication - you've all shown that, we couldn't be more proud of our wrestlers! You all have done wonders this year! Be proud, we are!!

Also, be proud to be part of a team who sent 29 wrestlers to qualifiers this weekend! That's amazing! You are amazing kids and you will go far, stick with it! We are sticking with you!!! Also, to each and everyone our wrestlers who were able to participate in Qualifiers today - you ALL showed great effort, courage and gave it your all - be proud of your accomplishments, WE are proud of ALL of you! Volunteers will be needed for the Little Kids State Tournament - 3/12

All, the Roswell program will be hosting the Little School State Duals at Milton on Saturday, March 12, 2011.

We need volunteers to work tables, work admissions, security, concessions, the hospitality room, data entry -- etc.  We are going to use the Roswell Folkstyle classic volunteer list as the basis for our volunteer slots. We realize that many folks are on to other sports in March, but we need to have all of our Parents (High School Middle School and Elementary School) parents involved in volunteering. If we don't have you, we don't have a tournament.  This is a fund raiser that helps us replace "selling stuff."

If you know of a youth group or are involved in a youth group who need to do community service or who would be willing to volunteer, please let Karen Miller know @ jeffkarmil@yahoo.com . We need boppers aged 10+, runners 8th grade + and assistance with additonal operations.

We mostly need parents to do brackets, table coordination, timing, scoring, security, concessions, admissions among other duties.

Karen Miller will be coordinating volunteer slots for the tournament - the Middle School State Duals was a Milton tournament, the Little School State is a Roswell Tournament. We will be also reaching out to Milton for volunteers, but need our program to step up for key positions.

If you've ever worked a tournament before (or have been to a tournament before) - the goal of Roswell tournaments is to have every position filled and every function to work like clockwork in order to have no issues. Nobody likes downtime and nobody likes having to go to a tournament that runs smoothly. We need your help - so please start planning your schedules to be available on March 12th and March 13th to work the Little Kids state tournament. This is a big deal for Roswell and helps to keep our registration fees low for your wrestlers!

You will be seeing more in email this next few weeks regarding the tournament and proposed training classes.

If you have any questions regarding volunteer positions, please direct them to Karen Miller at jeffkarmil@yahoo.com.

Thanks,
Karen Miller
Roswell JR Hornets - Admin.

Congratulations to our Middle School Team for Placing 5th in the USA Division!

Congratulations to our Middle School Dual Team for placing 4th in the USA Division at Middle School Duals!

This is a great accomplishment for our wrestlers - we gave up 2 slots (automatic 12 point loss) and ended up wrestling-back to accomplish placement in the USA division.  In the USA division there were 14 Teams, we ended up 5th! Over all at the State duals there were 30 teams.  So we held our own and did remarkable well, as we knew our wrestlers would!  Can you all imagine what we'd do if we had all of our slots filled!

We wrestled well and all of our wrestlers put on their "A" game - we are so proud of you all. We are proud of all of our parents too!!

Great Job Roswell JR Hornet Wrestling!

Good Luck to Our Roswell Middle School Team @ Middle School State Duals

Best of luck to our middle school team at the GA State Middle School Duals - there will be a lot of fierce wrestling and many tough teams - we know you will show your "A" game and you will have your teammates and wrestling partners right there beside you, cheering you on!

You guys had a great showing at Pope Duals even when we were down four slots  - make each point count!

You all are fine wrestlers, keep the momentum going  - keep the teamwork going and do wonders!

Good Luck Roswell Wrestling Middle School Dual Team at State Duals!!

Go Roswell!

Roswell Beacon Article - Way To Go Varsity Hornets!!

Roswell Wrestlers Headed to State After Winning Region Duals

On January 8 the Roswell Hornets Varsity Wrestlers did something no team in school history had ever done: they placed first at the region meet.

The Hornets grappled their way to the 6 – AAAAA Duals at West Forsyth High School knocking off the host Wolverines in the championship round.

Hornets win area, move on to state - NeighborNewspapers.com Article

1/13/11 -  Hornets win area, move on to state - By Ryan Peck -  peck@neighbornewspapers.com

(Photo Caption: The Roswell Hornets celebrate their Area 6AAAAA dual championship at West Forsyth last weekend. It was the first area team title in school history for Roswell, which will head to Macon for the Class-AAAAA state championships in February).

In what marked the biggest weekend in Roswell wrestling in quite some time, the Hornets swept through the area duals at West Forsyth on Saturday and snagged the 6AAAAA team title.

The area championship marked the first dual title in school history and clinched a berth in the state duals, which have been rescheduled for Feb. 24 to 26 in Macon due to inclement weather across the state this week.

At West Forsyth, Roswell dispatched Northview (68-12), North Forsyth (35-24) and the home-standing Wolverines (34-33) in the final round, setting off a celebration and clinching a Hornets berth in the GHSA state festivities next month.

"It's just huge, because when I first started with the program three years ago we forfeited three weight classes (at area) and finished eighth out of 10 (teams)," said RHS head coach Evan Goff, who had served as a Roswell assistant the previous two years.

"In just a matter of three years, winning in a new region - one of the strongest in terms of depth in the whole state - it means a great deal," Goff added.

At state, the fifth-seeded Hornets will battle Benedictine in the first round at the Macon Centreplex. If it advances, Roswell will face the winner of Kennesaw Mountain-Parkview in the second round with a potential semifinal matchup against top-seed and perennial state power Collins Hill looming after that.

Back at West Forsyth, the Hornets were led by Chaz Gunning (140 pounds), Jake Martin (119) and Corey Wilson (152). Goff said freshmen Rowdy Miller (112) and Charles Routt (130) also came up big, wrestling beyond their years in a hostile environment.

"Every West Forsyth person was there pulling for [the Wolverines]," said Goff. "It was great to overcome the hometown crowd and kinda shut 'em up. Our kids were definitely excited, but we were classy about it. We definitely felt deserving."

Roswell was the lone north Fulton program to advance to the state duals in Macon. Milton, which had narrowly defeated Roswell earlier this season, finished third at the 6AAAAA duals.

Now moving on to state, Goff and the Hornets feel like they will be playing with house money.

"Our chances of winning are slim, but our goal is to come out there and knock off some teams," he said.

With the delay, Roswell (11-2) now shifts its focus to a Wednesday home match against Lassiter. The rescheduled state duals will follow the traditional tournaments for area, sectional and state, which are scheduled to take place the first three weekends in February.

Middle School Team - Tremendious Effort!

A job well done today to our Middle School Dual Team, even if it doesn't seem that way. Just remember, we gave up 30 team points before we even stepped on the mat for the first bout of each round (5 unfilled slots - total of 6 team points per forfeit(6X5=30)) - we were playing catch up and almost did a few times, so we have some talent!! That's huge and needs to be developed!

We had some stellar matches and wrestled well  and actually had some close team scores - Just imagine what we could have done with a full roster! The thing about duals is that while, individually it's always great to win, but to be there! If you aren't there on a team and we have to forfeit, we lose 6 points. If you get caught and lose by points that's only a 3-4 point loss - if another team doesn't have a wrestler at your weight, we get 6 points. So, it's important as a team that we have a full roster.  Even if you are an alternate, that is an important part of a dual team, you are there to support your teammates and just as important as the starting lineup.

The dual format is how you will wrestle in High School and  the one thing that we hope all of our Middle Schooler's learned today is that whatever you do on the mat, affects what happens to the rest of your teammates.  We had some tight matches that could have gone either way and we had a few upset matches as well. Keep that in mind as prepare for the Middle School State Duals at Milton on January 22, 2011. Most of our middle schoolers who helped Roswell place 4th in Division and 7th in State last year are back with us this year - we have some fantastic wrestlers and hope our missing ones today can join us for the State tournament.

You all represented Roswell well, we are all proud of each and everyone of you for your sportsmanship and support of one another - that is first and foremost of our program.

Your High School "brothers" won their first Dual Regional Championship yesterday in the history at Roswell, that is huge!   Shake off individual losses and even today's team losses at the Duals - you all showed that you were a team, lets work as a team to learn from mistakes and to work with each other to build on our strengths!

Way to go JR Hornet Middle School - you wrestled great today!!! Keep working!!

Roswell Folkstyle Classic Training

It takes a lot of vounteers to run a tournament - we need each family in the JR program to volunteer for at least one session at the Folkstyle Classic - we have a morning session for the elementary kids and will have the afternoon session for the middle school kids.  We will be working 2 other tournaments this year, Middle School State Duals, January 22, 2011 and the Little Kids State Tournament.

We need table workers as there is a possibility that the High School Varsity Team may qualify for area state duals the same weekend as our Folkstyle Classic. If you are new to the sport, brackets are a great way to get more involved, if you have some experience volunteering at one of our tournaments, volunteer for a table coordinator, timer or scorer position. We will be having training through out the month of January in preparation for the tournaments.

Handouts for the training can be found on the Roswell Folkstyle Classic Website. Click on volunteers.

Next Training Sessions:
Monday, January 3rd, at 7:00 pm at the new training facility.

Wednesday, January 5th, at 6:30 pm at the new training facility.
