A Letter from Father to Son

I found this letter on the blog and I thought I would share with all of our parents. I believe in this letter it shares what wrestling is all about.

To my son,

You had a tough time on the mat today and the ride home was pretty quiet. I admit I was very disappointed but I later came to realize that I shouldn’t be and that it is all part of the journey you are taking.

When I watch you on the mat I worry that you are doing battle while unprepared and that I have failed in your preparation. As a father that is my greatest fear, that you are unprepared to face the challenges that will come before you. I want you to be prepared for your match, but I’ve come to realize that it is the matches themselves that, are in the long run, win or lose, the things that ARE preparing you.

I think that the greatest benefit from wrestling is learning to face challenges and to demand the most from yourself. You learn to fight when you think there is no more fight left within you. You learn to get up after you’ve fallen, time and time again. You learn about sacrifice and about pain. You learn to endure and to overcome. This is what I want for you, not because I wrestled, but because these lessons are the true gifts of this sport. So, those losses today were actually part of this gift, and an important part of the journey.

My dream for you is to not just win championships and fill your room with medals. My dream for you is much greater and I hope you get much more from wrestling. I hope you learn to strive for greatness even if you fail in the attempt. I hope you learn to get up one more time when you think you can’t get up any longer. I hope you learn to not only face your fears, but to stare them down.

Wrestling isn’t about winning. It is about the desire to win. It isn’t about success, but rather the determination to succeed. I want you to succeed as a wrestler, not to win state championships, but I want you to be a successful wrestler so you learn to be all that you can. This sport can help teach you that, if you let it. I look forward to the seasons of our future as you go through these lessons and I’ll be in your corner for each and every one of them. I love you.

Dad

Happy Holidays and Seasons Greetings!

Some of our Coaches decided to go to Europe the past week and found themselves in a snowhaven - we are thankful that they were able to find some flights out of Europe to be with us for practice this week, though many other weary passengers are stuck.

Wouldn't you know the Elementary Coaches found themselves in a lopsided snowball fight against the Middle School Coaches. Since there were no real clear take downs, reversals or escapes the snow-refs called it a draw match -  0-0.  I don't think the coaches minded much at all! It was fun, just to play!

For the coaches who couldn't go on this excursion, we'll make sure you are there for the next adventure. :)

We do have a fun video of the European snow ball fight. Enjoy!

Be well and safe this Holiday Season and Happy New Year!!

Beginner wrestlers

I was looking back over Sundays matches. I saw something I don't believe I ever saw before. Beside Roswell wrestlers having fun and working hard, I saw perfect technique of moves we worked in practice. I saw heart and hard work. I want all my wrestlers to know how proud I am of them.
We had several wrestlers take first place. Plus in addition all my wrestlers never quit.
I think we are on our way to something special.
Thanks for the hard work.

Wrestling starts around 9:00am and will probably not end until around 3:00p.m. - this is a great opportunity to support RHS and can help our younger wrestlers get a feel of live wrestling in a dual meet setting.

It's an all day event, so we are sure that you won't want to spend all day at Centennial, but stop in for an hour or two. The HS team has some really exciting wrestlers this year and a great coaching staff. Support your older "brothers" - Go Roswell!

Adam Wilson former JR Hornet wrestler (We're proud of you Adam)

Mocs Wrestlers Add Five More To 2010 Incoming Class
posted July 21, 2010

UTC wrestling coach Heath Eslinger announced the addition of five new Mocs to the 2010 recruiting class today.

Eslinger will welcome incoming freshmen Shawn Greevy (Mechanicsburg, Pa.), Kevin Malone (Carrollton, Ohio), Blake Thomas (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Adam Wilson (Atlanta, Ga.) and sophomore transfer Prescott Garner (West Linn, Ore.) to the roster in the fall.

This group joins the four student-athletes the Mocs inked during the fall signing period, bringing the recruiting class to a total of nine.

Levi Clemons (Kissimmee, Fla.), Joe DeAngelo (Mebane, N.C.), Cole Hayes (Knoxville) and Trey Stavrum (Chattanooga) all signed with Chattanooga in the early period.

"Just like the group we signed in the fall, these five student-athletes fit into what we are trying to do academically, athletically and socially," stated Eslinger.

"There is a lot of potential in this nine-member class and with a commitment to doing things the right way, they can be very successful on the mat and in the classroom."

Thomas highlights the group after capping off a perfect 38-0 record during his senior season at Brentwood (Tenn.) High School and winning the D-I 125-pound state title. Wilson is a two-time state runner-up at Roswell High School and will look to compete at 133.

Greevy is also a state runner-up from Mechanicsburg, Pa., who will compete at 149 for the Mocs. Chattanooga beat out Ohio State and Kent State for the heavyweight services of Malone.

Garner is a 133-pound sophomore who is transferring from Clackamas Community College in Oregon City, Ore. He was an NCAA qualifier at Navy as a freshman in 2009 and redshirted last season at Clackamas CC.

Chattanooga has won six consecutive Southern Conference regular season titles and 24 of the 33 SoCon championships since 1978. Eslinger just completed his first season as head coach of his alma mater.

Pro Football players trained by wrestling Coach

Football players are learning that wrestling improves their quickness and conditioning plus more.

Ratliff's ready after grinding in Georgia

June, 9, 2010 Reprinted From ESPN

By Tim MacMahon

All-Pro nose tackle Jay Ratliff missed most of the Cowboys’ organized team activities in part due to the influence of ex-teammate Terrell Owens.

Sounds dramatic, right? It really isn't.

T.O.’s fanatical approach to physical fitness rubbed off on Ratliff, who marveled at how the headline-grabbing receiver seemed to get faster as he got older. Ratliff worked out with T.O.’s longtime personal trainer Buddy Primm in Atlanta last winter and was so pleased with the results that he was determined to repeat the process this year.

The problem was that Ratliff underwent surgeries on both elbows to remove bone spurs. That meant he wasn’t ready to spend a month sweating in his native Georgia during the winter, as he did last year. He opted to spend the last four weeks in Atlanta despite the conflict with the Cowboys’ voluntary OTA program.

“It’s nothing against the team,” said Ratliff, who discussed his decision with his defensive linemates and coaches. “It’s just something I felt like I needed to do. I felt like I needed to get to Atlanta, hone in on my craft and focus on rehab.

“Whatever I feel like I’ve got to do to get an edge, I’m going to do.”

Ratliff returned to Valley Ranch this week and participated in Wednesday’s practice. He said he felt like his work in Atlanta paid off.

While in Atlanta, Ratliff spent almost every waking moment either eating or working out. He ate every few hours and adhered to a strict diet that cut out sweets, fried foods and pork. His daily schedule included a weightlifting session, two conditioning sessions with Primm and a daily mixed martial arts (MMA) training session with former Penn State All-American wrestler John Hanrahan. He believes the MMA training has improved his ability to use his hands and leverage. Each session starts with boxing work before going to grappling, with Ratliff working his way up to six rounds with only 60 seconds of rest in between. “The conditioning part of that is amazing,” said Ratliff, a rare 3-4 nose tackle who stays on the field in passing situations. “Once you get on the field, you never get tired. If you do, you recover extremely fast.”

Ratliff weighed in at 296 pounds, which he said is a pound heavier than the weight he played at last season. He feels quicker and stronger.

The pain in his elbows, which have bothered him the last three years and gradually got worse, is “extremely tolerable.” It was often excruciating last season, when he never asked for a play off but often compensated for the pain by altering his technique.

“I haven’t felt like this in awhile,” Ratliff said. “I’m hoping and praying for big things.”

He put in the work the last month, albeit far away from the Cowboys’ practice facility.

Roswell Juniors Hornet Wrestling Recruiting

Have A great Summer !!

Fall/winter season fades into summer.

There are plenty of Wrestling opportunities during the summer months. Some wrestlers go year round.

We are in full swing for Greco and Freestyle wrestling (during the fall/winter - wrestling focuses on Folkstyle). While officially, Roswell does not train for Greco and Freestyle there are many opportunities in the state to become engaged.

Greco and Freestyle are the styles of wrestling that are seen in the olympics. Folkstyle is what is concentrated on during high school and college, often referred to collegiate.

You don`t have to be a heavy weight to wrestle age groups for the youth programs run between 50-270+ pounds.

Wrestling isn`t just for boys, there are a number of top-notch female wrestlers as well.

Ages and weights are carefully paired up in tournaments so that your child is paired up in age/weight. There are a number of `newbie` tournaments as well, so if you have a beginner, you can pick and choose where to have your wrestler compete

It`s a great family sport.

The Roswell JR Hornet wrestling program, has a stellar cast of talented coaches at both the Elementary and Middle School levels. We`ve been developing a top notch program.

All of our coaches are volunteers and come from excellent -*wrestling backgrounds and all are bronze card carrying members of the USAW association and have been fully screened.

Roswell JR Wrestling has a promising future.

Wrestling teaches discipline, hard work, tenacity and most of all character!

For more information, click on the contact information to your left and send an email or call Jeff Miller, Roswell JR Hornet Wrestling Director.

Spenser Mango

Spenser Mango at Harry Lester Camp

By Gary Abbott USA Wrestling
05/18/2010

Spenser Mango of the New York AC has been the dominant competitor at 55 kg/121 lbs. over the last three seasons. Mango competed in both the 2008 Olympic Games and the 2009 World Championships, but still seeks his first medal on the World level. Mango retained his top spot in the rankings by winning the U.S. Open in Cleveland in April, his second career national title. He is a past University World Champion and Junior World medalist. When he is wrestling well, Mango has an explosive offense and often executes high amplitude throws.

Placing second behind Mango in Cleveland was the 2009 U.S. Open champion Jermaine Hodge of the U.S. Army. Hodge also won the Armed Forces Championships this year. Like Mango, he is very big at 55 kg and offers a tremendous challenge to his opponents physically.

2006 World bronze medalist Lindsey Durlacher of the New York AC could be a top challenger here. Durlacher went up to 60 kg for the U.S. Open, but a week later was back down at 55 kg at the Pan American Championships. His experience and skill allowed him to make three straight World Teams from 2005-2007.

Spenser Mango’s younger brother Ryan Mango of the New York AC placed third at the U.S. Open. He was also a strong third at the World Team Trials last year. He just completed his freshman year at Stanford, where he was a NCAA qualifier. Ryan was tremendously successful in Greco-Roman in USA Wrestling’s age-group programs, and has transferred that success to the Senior level.

Max Nowry of the New York AC was fourth at the U.S. Open, and also won the title at the 2010 University Nationals. Nowry has made progress since joining the USOEC program in Northern Michigan, but he is still a bit undersized at 55 kg. He also has much age-group Greco-Roman success.

Also qualifying for the World Team Trials by placing in the top seven at the U.S. Open were Paul Tellgren of the Minnesota Storm in fifth, Nikko Triggas of the Ohio RTC in sixth and Kevin Hunter from Utah in seventh. Tellgren has shown improvement as part of the USOEC program in recent seasons. Triggas was a NCAA All-American for Ohio State this year, and has won two University Nationals Greco-Roman titles.

Sunkist Kids International champion Nate Engel of the Sunkist Kids has also qualified here. Engel was fourth at the 2009 U.S. Open and has considerable international experience.

High school star Jesse Thielke of the Ringers, a member of the 2009 Junior World Team, qualified for the World Team Trials by winning the Northern Plains Regional. Claiming the title at the Northeast Regionals and qualifying for Council Bluffs is Mike Pena of the U.S. Marines. Rounding out the field at 55 kg/121 lbs. is University Nationals runner-up Tyler Erdman of the Modern Day Gladiators, who was second in the 2010 NCAA Div. III Nationals for Elizabethtown College.

Spenser Mango enters the World Team Trials as a decided favorite, but challenges from Jermaine Hodge, Lindsey Durlacher and others should make this weight class quite interesting in Council Bluffs.

2010 U.S. Open results at 55 kg/121 lbs. in Greco-Roman
1st - Spenser Mango, St. Louis, Mo. (New York AC) dec. Jermaine Hodge, Colorado Springs, Colo. (U.S. Army), 0-1, 1-0, 2-0
3rd - Ryan Mango, St. Louis, Mo. (New York AC) dec. Max Nowry, Wheeling, Ill. (New York AC), 3-1,6-0
5th - Paul Tellgren, Anoka, Minn. (Minnesota Storm) dec. Nikko Triggas, Moraga, Calif. (Ohio Regional Training Center), 1-0, 1-0
7th - Kevin Hunter, Orem, Utah (Unattached) dec. David Armstrong, Cleveland, Ohio (Cleveland WC), 1-0, 8-1

World Team Trials qualifiers at 55 kg/121 pounds in Greco-Roman
U.S. Open Champion – Spenser Mango, St. Louis, Mo. (New York AC)
U.S. Open, second place – Jermaine Hodge, Colorado Springs, Colo. (U.S. Army),
U.S. Open, third place - Ryan Mango, St. Louis, Mo. (New York AC)

First Freestyle Greco Tournament this weekend

I went to Alexander for the first tournament this weekend.
It had that great low key feel of Spring wrestling, with kids getting plenty of matches and working out the kinks of adjusting to FS/G techniques, and strategies.
I saw 3 5 point throws and some great matches. I watch these young wrestlers that compete in FS/G and see how they improve.
If you have some time in between all the other sports try to go to one of these events. As a coach I really like these 2 events better then folkstyle. You can watch State champions get dominated by wrestlers you never heard of before.
Team GA is given free practices I would like to see a few of our wrestlers attend.

OPEN MATS

Coach Goff

Attention all football players need to read.

Ohio State football: Work on mat can be edge on line Buckeyes past, present excelled as wrestlers, too
Wednesday, August 15, 2007 3:41 AM By Ken Gordon
Each year, Ohio State's co-defensive coordinator evaluates dozens, maybe hundreds of high school football players while recruiting. They're all big, all fast, all strong. But tell Fickell a kid is a standout wrestler, and he'll get a gleam in his eye. Now he's interested. "We talk about Competitiveness, and I don't think there's a better sport to look at someone's competitiveness than wrestling," Fickell said. "You can tell (with wrestlers), it's something that's one-on-one competitive, and that's what we're trying to look for. "You can't define it. You don't know what someone has got inside their chest and their heart, but if you know they've been one on one and they've got that competitive nature * " Fickell knows. He was a three-time state champion wrestler at DeSales, and as a defensive lineman at Ohio State he set a school record for consecutive starts (50). Since then, several Buckeyes have gone from being high school wrestling stars to successful football careers, including offensive lineman Alex Stepanovich and defensive tackle Tim Anderson, each now in the NFL. This season, defensive tackle Dexter Larimore appears ready to uphold that tradition. He was the nation's top-ranked heavyweight wrestler two years ago at Merrillville (Ind.) High School. Just a redshirt freshman, Larimore had a stellar spring and will see extensive playing time this fall. Technique has a lot to do with what makes wrestlers successful linemen. They are accustomed to being tied up, pretzel-like, with an opponent. "I know a little bit more about leverage than some defensive linemen do," Larimore said, "so it helps that I can just keep a little bit lower center of gravity. I just try and work guys into kind of backwards positions for them, but it's kind of natural for me." Offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Jim Bollman said he notices wrestlers tend to be adept at getting their hands in proper position, which is a key to blocking or defeating a block.
"The quickness and strength of their hands inside is becoming a much bigger part of the football game nowadays," Bollman said. "And I think that (wrestlers) have a little bit of a head start."
But as Fickell said, it's the intangible desire that translates well to football. Wrestlers famously have a warrior mentality. Injuries and fatigue are no excuse. "When you're a wrestler, you have to put a lot on yourself if you want to be good," Stepanovich said. "It teaches you that every day in wrestling you're not going to feel good. You're going to have bumps and bruises. You've got to be able to grind it out. I think that helps in football." Larimore said he thinks wrestling makes him better equipped to handle adversity, such as the heat and humidity the Buckeyes practiced in last week. "Wrestling is so hard and just so physically taxing on your body, that I get out there (for football practice) and a lot of guys will mentally break: 'It's hot,' and I just keep working and trying to get better," he said. "I just can basically push myself to a point where I physically can't go anymore. I think wrestling instills that mentality." Another wrestler is in the Ohio State pipeline. Defensive tackle Garrett Goebel of Lombard, Ill., recently orally committed to the 2008 recruiting class. He won his state's heavyweight title in the spring. "My nasty attitude comes from wrestling," Goebel told the Chicago Sun Times. "You can't be a nice guy and be an accomplished wrestler. You have to want to stick a guy's nose into the mat. "In football, I want to hurt the other guy. I want to knock him down all the time." He sounds like Fickell's type.

Big Kid State Results

Roswell takes 3rd in 12 U at State and 8th overall. We had an Unbelievable season. We started out the season with only 3 returning 8th graders and the rest were 5th,6th and 7th graders. We had a lot of new faces in the practice room. We also had some key wrestlers join our program late. As we got closer to qualifiers things started coming together. We were tested at Middle school duals where we took 4th in the Div and 7th in State. Also as a team we took a 4th place at Walton.
We then took 17 middle school kids to qualifiers and qualified 16. This was the highest number the program ever had. At States we sent 6 Roswell kids to the platform with one State Champion. Once again the best we ever done before in the past.
I want to thank everyone for your support.
Great Job Roswell JR Hornets
The best is yet to come.

Congratulations to All our JR Hornets State Placers

Proof of another great year. This season we had the most State placers ever!!!
We crowned 1 State Champion Ryan Willis. Congratulations to Ryan for an outstanding season.
We had two third placer which are Cameron Whiteman and Jonathan Kwateng. Both of these wrestlers were first year wrestlers and had a great season.
We also had 3 4Th placers which had a great season. Robert Copenhaver, Charles Routt and Rowdy Miller. Congratulations to these wrestlers.

It just doesn't stop with them. We had 16 kids hit the mats yesterday and fight with all they had. I watched our guys use what they were taught and wrestle outstanding matches. Placing in State isn't easy and all of our guys were prepared.
I want to that the coaching staff for all the hard work and time. I also want to thank the parents that support our program and spend all those hours in the gym watching our kids.

Hope everyone had a great State experience. Our State has some of the toughest wrestlers around.
Go Roswell I'm proud of everyone.

Practice Changes for the Weeks of February 22st and March 1st

In preparation for the State Qualifer Tournaments and the State Tournament, we have altered both the elementary and middle school practice schedule.

The elementary wrestlers will be practicing Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 6 pm-7 pm, except Wednesdays we`ll be ending at 7:15.

The middle school wrestlers will be practicing Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 7 pm until 8 pm.

Even if you don't plan to send your child to the qualifiers or if on the off chance that your child does not qualify for the State tournament, we are asking that you still send your wrestler to practice to show support for their teammates who will still need practice partners.

If you have any questions about where the team will attend qualifiers or have concerns about where to enter your wrestler, please talk to the coaches.

Go Roswell!!! Good luck at qualifiers!

Parents of 2010-2011 high school wrestlers and Jr hornet parents

Parents of 2010-2011 high school wrestlers and Jr hornet parents,

Yes we are talking about next year’s wrestling parents. We need to have a meeting concerning important issues that will affect us next year. We need to get as much parent input as possible to make some decisions on growing our programs. Therefore we will be holding a parent meeting on Wednesday, Feb 3 in the media center at 7:00. There is not a high school meet that night. All parents are urged to attend to voice your opinions.

We will have a wrap up of the Jr Hornet Folkstyle Classic and the Middle School State Duals. We will report on finances from the high school and Jr Hornet programs. We will also be discussing the progress of the wrestling barn and fundraising needs for next year. Parent input is very important as needed to evaluate what we will need to finance the building. These decisions will have an impact on all of us next season so please come and be part of the decision making.

Thank you 6th Annual Hornet Folkstyle Classic Volunteers

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! WE DID IT AGAIN!! Another successful tournament and we received great reviews. We will email everyone with the bottom line when all expenses are submitted. This tournament does not happen without everyone’s commitment and countless volunteer hours.

A few statistics about the tournament
 693 Wrestlers
 1102 Matches on 9.5 Mats
 AM Session’s last match concluded at 12:44 ending the morning 4 mins off plan)
 PM session’s last match concluded at 5:23 ending the afternoon and the tournament a little under estimated downtime of 5:40.
 176 Volunteers working approx. 1,225 Hours
 Hospitality dished 9 crocks of chill serving over 250 people
 115 hot dogs, 150 biscuits, 110 Arbys, 240 slices of pizza, over 1000 drinks and 200 yummy pretzels sold

Everyone did a great job on their assigned tasks, others stepped up to be leaders and coordinators, and still others filled in at the last minute and this is how the Hornets are able to run such a great tournament. At this point, this is the largest Jr. Tournament in the state for the year, and will probably remain so for the season. This is only possible by our dedicated volunteers.

We want to give a special thanks to those individuals that took on specific areas (concessions, admissions, data entry, hospitality,) and ran the show. We also want to thank those families and individuals who were with us all weekend. We had several families who had all members present Friday night and all day Saturday, down to the last minute clean up. At 5:30 everyone is tired and hungry, but we still have those 20+ who are there to do the hardest and most tiring part of breaking it all down and cleaning up. Thank you!!

Now to the group of individuals who get the least amount of recognition, do the most work, and who the tournament would not happen with, the high school wrestling team and coaches. These boys had practice until 5:45 on Friday, showered at school and were putting mats down by 6:15. There were there until 10:30 on Friday night, back by 7:15 on Saturday and left at 6:30. They are the ones who do the part no one else can do. Not only do they work all day at the tables, they are the ones that carry and set up the mats. Parents of high school wrestlers, please let your son know how much we appreciate all of their hard work. High school wrestlers you are the best!!!

I can’t express enough our gratitude for your efforts to help built our wrestling program. I do also want to encourage members of our Jr. Hornets program and our raising underclassman parents to step for more leadership roles in 2011 (January 15, 2011) as we start key succession planning for the future.

Thank you again for a job well done,

Bruce Gunning

Middle School State Duals - Volunteers Needed - please read!

The Georgia Middle School Duals will be held January 23, 2010 at Milton High School.

We will be working to fill out our roster for the Middle School this week and will only be able to take around 22 boys with some alternates from the middle school program. We will be able to get that information out early this week.

Please watch your email for the volunteer sign up list and volunteer where you can. Don't be nervous - we need adults to help and within the USA/Team Georgia family there is great understanding.

The Dual Tournament is a joint fundraiser for the Jr Hornets and the Milton Jr Eagles. We will be using their shool but splitting the profits 50/50. Therefore we must supply half of the workers.

Every Family that has a wrestler on Saturday must work a shift and help with either set-up or clean-up. The elementary kids will be at another tournament and the high school team has a meet that day and will not be able to help on the tables.

Table workers will be scoring the matches. This is a team tournament so we will not need to do bracketing or need table coordinators. The bracketing will be done at the head table. If you have a general understanding of scoring you will be able to do it!

Bruce Gunning will be training everyone on Thursday, January 21 at 7:00 pm in the classroom by the wrestling room. There will also be someone from each team at the table to assist you if you have questions. Please realize that we have only a few days to fill our volunteer slots - watch your email and the blog for additional information.

The Middle School Dual Flyer can be found on the files and forms page under the Jr Hornet link on our main website: Roswell Wrestling

Thank you for your continued support.

For 8th Graders comming up next year!

I have locked us in the new weight room at Roswell High beginning in March for every Tuesday and Thursday morning, from 6:30am to 7:30am. I want every kid who plans on wrestling next year and is not in a spring sport to participate. This includes all 8th graders comming up next year. If you are participating in Football workouts that will be ok. You will have plenty of time to get a shower afterwards and get to school still. We are seeing everyday that if we can't be physical and strong, we can't even execute many skills on the mat. These morning sessions will continue until May 21st, the last day of school. I am telling you this so you can prepare starting today. You should be lifting on your own at a local gym or at your house to prep your body for what is to come. Online you can find many beginner workouts with proper technique instructions. I would encourage everyone to take this just as important as practice itself. For us to take the next step in a new region next year, we must get stronger. Again, start preparing today, no excuses!
