Great turn out at Winter break camp

We had several of our young wrestlers that attended this camp. This was a great 3 days and they met the current Heavy weight Greco Champ and got to train with Harry Lester. With a full house there was plenty of practice partners to trade off and learned a lot of new moves and wrestled with some of the best GA talent.

Hope everyone has a great Holiday

Updates

We have a lot going on so I want to make sure everyone is getting the word. We will be at Creekview High school this weekend. There is a tour of GA also this weekend where I will be if anyone wants to make that trip.

We won't be able to practice over the holidays so our kids still will need to condition and work hard, This year there are a lot more tournaments and beginners then I have ever seen. Don't forget to register early. If something comes up you can always pull out of that tournament and move to another later on. As long as you do this before 10 PM on Thursday.

Any questions let me know.

Recruiting Is Looking good!!

All,
Keep on spreading the word. We are also encouraging middle school kids 160 lbs. and heavier. To look into wrestling. If we get a few kids at those weights we will be well rounded as a team. Weights range from 60-200 lbs. for the middle school level. The kids are paired in practice to skill and ability and are also trained. No experience is required. Nobody is turned back.

Everyone welcome. Lets get the word out so we have many practice partners this season.

I'm very excited from the initial results and I believe we will have the best year ever.

We are looking forward to working with first year wrestlers and watching them learn about the best sport ever. Practice starts soon so lets get all our friends involved in wrestling.

I love this sport and I hope we can pass the tradition on.
Go Jr Hornet Wrestling

Open Mats for Middle School and Elementry School

Hey guys we completed our first practice tonight. We could use a better turnout. We had 14 wrestlers tonight and the ages and weights matched up good. Coach Murphy is very good and we can't waste this chance to get this type of instruction to prepare for the regular season. As I stated before this is free to everyone. I know you guys are busy and can't make it here every night due to other engagements but at least try once a week. For the wrestlers that aren't doing anything in the fall this is a must. We are at the High School Mat room Monday's, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.
Everyone that was at practice tonight it was a good first practice. We saw the rust from the off season but that will shake off quickly. We had a lot of new faces which was encouraging.
Get the word out and lets get more wrestlers out to practice.

The Conditioned Wrestler

Folkstyle season is coming up soon, and it's time to evaluate how prepared your child is to get the most out of their tournaments! To be successful, a wrestler requires strength, flexibility, and lots of anaerobic and aerobic conditioning throughout the competitive season. It's been awhile since their last practice for many of our kids, so its time to start getting ready, since those tournaments can creep up very quickly!

For an elementary-school aged wrestler, strength and conditioning work can start with cross-training in other sports such as football and basketball, with some bodyweight calisthenics in the offseason. The focus for the young kids is to not make strength and conditioning seem like work, but rather play. The older junior wrestler can consider beginning weight training, sprints, plyometrics, and modest runs for aerobic endurance. Considering the short duration of the junior wrestler's match, conditioning training should be primarily anaerobic, which means long runs are not as necessary as exercises that require short bursts of power, such as interval training. 4-12 intervals of 200-800 meter sprints are great for developing the stamina a wrestler needs to last into that third round of the match. You can also substitute jump rope or jumping jacks, provided the intervals and rest periods are similar to that faced in competition.

Burpees are a great exercise to get kids in shape for wrestling, as they promote agility, power, and endurance all in one exercise. To perform this movement, start from a standing position. Squat down and place your hands on the floor, then kick your feet back so that you are a pushup start position. Drop your chest to the floor, then as you come back up, return your feet to the squat position. Without pausing, immediately jump up as high as you can, then start over. Start with 10 reps, and as you improve, focus on how fast you can complete them with good form. A great standard is completing 100 in under 8 minutes.

Strength and conditioning is important for success in any sport. But it is even more so for wrestlers.

All the best,

Ken Koontz, MS, CSCS

First Pre Season Tournament

Hope everyone summer has been Great. School starts tomorrow and soon we'll be thinking of wrestling. Preseason Tournaments for all ages start Set. 12 At Alexander High School. A couple of us went last year and it had a good turn out. We will be starting pre-season practice in Sept. More info on this will come.

Also this is a perfect time for all the kids to start talking to their friends about wrestling. If every returning youth wrestler brought out 1 friend this would help us meet our goals. So I'm asking all the parents that believe in our program and wrestling to help recruit. If all the kids help spread the word and bring out their friends we can be strong.

Since I've put up this site I've had 3 inquiries about the program. Lets get the word out about jr Hornet wrestling.

North Georgia Summer League Tourn Results
What a good week of wrestling. Most kids got in 9 matches this week. Fridays tournament went well; 214 matches and done by 4:00 (but we will go on four mats next year). Thanks to Drew Craig and Josh Harrison who reffed all day for a T-Shirt (and experience). Thanks to SF wrestling program for hosting the tournament. As we get into the results I will go ahead and say this is summer and every team was missing people; I'm sure. So "it is what it is" or the wrestling term "wrestling is wrestling" (and I stole that from a good article in WIN Magazine). I hope all teams come back and we add a few more next year. Teams in were: Jefferson, Commerce, Gilmer, Peachtree Ridge, South Forsyth, Lambert, Lumpkin, West Hall, Brookwood, North Oconnee, Buford, Forsyth Central, Roswell (Roswell did duals all week but only a couple kids came to the tournament b/c of schedule conflicts)
Scoring: 1st place = 6pts, 2nd = 4pts, 3rd = 2pts, 4th= 1pt. Yes it favors heavy hitters but I'm scoring a summer tournament.

Message from Coach Goff

Hello all! A wrestling season like any other sport consist of three distinct segments: the preseason, the season, and the off-season. The preseason is the area from September to the end of October and is the focus of this first blog. I just got off the phone with Dustin Kowa from "The Wrestling Academy." He has invited our whole program, any parent and kid of any age or experience level, to a open house practice session at his facility on August 17th at 6:00pm. This is outstanding news. Not only will our kids get a free practice session but the parents can ask questions, meet the coaches, and see the facility while Dustin at the same time and discuss his 6 week preseason training program he is offering. I must let him know how many are interested in attending this "open house" in the next few weeks. I am attaching a link to his website at the bottom of the blog. What do I have in mind you may ask?I would love set up a carpool system to get our kids over to the Academy a few days a week during the off season. Dustin will explain his program at the Open house session on Aug. 17th but I can tell you it will get our guys where they need to be when they are handed off to Coach Carr and myself in November. Tell me whatcha think and I need to set up a list on who is interested! Email me or comment.
